Some interesting facts…

Did you know that the number 108 has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga? Malas (or prayer beads) often compliment a meditation practice and are traditionally comprised of 108 beads (with the addition of a “guru bead”) and are used for reciting a repeating mantra. This number also has significance in connecting the Sun, Moon, and Earth, being that the average distance of the Sun and the Moon to Earth is 108 times their respective diameters.

A few more fun facts on the cultural and religious significance of 108:

• There are 108 sacred stars in Chinese astrology.

• In Ayurveda, there are 108 “Marma” (or sacred places) throughout the body.

• In the Sanskrit alphabet, there are 54 letters and each can be mentioned as both masculine (Shiva) and feminine (Shakti), totaling 108.

• There are said to be 108 energy lines converging to form the heart chakra.
