Today’s SASSY SELF CARE SUPERSTAR is the amazingly talented Rachel Brathen, a.k.a Yoga_Girl; an international Yoga teacher, with an Instagram following of over half a million people.
Rachel spends her days soaking up the Caribbean sun, teaching yoga and running workshops and retreats in some of the most beautiful locations around the world. She was also one of the first people in the world to take yoga off the matt and onto a paddleboard, and now teaches Stand Up Paddle Board Yoga to others.
Rachel is a fearlessly free beauty who is illuminating the world with her passion and desire to inspire through her yoga practice on and off the mat. She inspires over half a million people everyday via instagram, with her care free spirit, words of wisdom, powerful poses and breathtakingly gorgeous pictures of the place she now calls home; Aruba.
Rachel was kind enough to take time out to share her thoughts on nurturing + nourishing your body and also the role self care plays in her own daily life.
What does SELF CARE + ME TIME mean to you?
Self care and Me Time is when I’m not working, when I’m home and doing just what I want to do. Which usually means absolutely nothing. I love drinking tea on the back porch, reading a good book. Or cooking with my fiancé, walking the dogs, practicing yoga… That’s my self care. Being with those I love.
Can you tell us why you believe it’s so important to declare your self care and incorporate self care practices into your daily rituals?
The love you have for yourself must come before everything else. You can’t take care of anyone else if you’re not caring for yourself first, and that goes for all of your relationships. The happier you are, the happier the people around you will be. Caring for yourself makes you a better person. It has nothing to do with being selfish, it’s quite the opposite… Caring for yourself means caring for the world. We need to love ourselves first.
What are your top 5 self care power practices that keep you revitalised + recharged + relaxed?
1. Practice Yoga
2. Drink lots of water
3. Take deep breaths/Meditate
4. Surround yourself with people that give you energy
5. Let go of the old
What are your top 3 self care practices that are nourishing + powerful + quick, that you believe any women can do, regardless of their situation and lifestyle?
1. Drink hot water with lemon in the morning. It’s the healthier, best way to start your day! Starting your day off with good decisions makes it easier to keep them up for the rest of the day.
2. Treat yourself to good things as often as you can. Get massages, acupuncture, facials… Whatever makes you feel good. You deserve it.
3. Start a yoga practice (can I repeat this?)
How do you ensure you maintain balance + vitality and keep your health + wellbeing a priority when life gets a little crazy?
Stop for a moment and come back to your priorities. Where does your happiness lie? It’s usually not in work, or appearance, or stress… It’s in the little things. Hug a loved one. Call a family member. Go for a walk. Cuddle with your dogs. Come back to those little things, those small acts of love. It’s what makes everything worthwhile! It will put your stress into perspective.
What self care secrets/advice can you share with someone who is wanting to cultivate a self care practice?
Start now. Don’t procrastinate! Don’t wait until Monday, or the first off the month, or new years day. Start now. Life is now. Caring for yourself starts now, too!
Rachel is a traveling yogi, beach bum, dog lover and chocolate addict who believes that to stay on the spiritual path, you gotta let yourself be a little crazy sometimes. She left her native (and very cold) Sweden at the young age of 18 to explore all four corners of the world. Currently residing on a small island in the Caribbean, she teaches yoga to any and all who are interested. Determined to bring yoga everywhere she goes, teaching from the heart and always with a smile, this girl won’t let anything stop her.
